This HOW-TO covers up the whole process of installing Adobe Photoshop CS2 on a Ubuntu box in a few simple steps. This method has been tested only on Ubuntu, but it should work on any other linux flavor. Any questions or feedback leave them in the comments.
UPDATE: Fixed some small inaccuracies in this HOW-TO. Thanks for your comments!

- What you need?
- A fresh install of Ubuntu Dapper + all the updates
- A Windows box with a fully installed and activated version of Adobe Photoshop CS2
- Fire up a terminal session and type the next commands;
TIP: Instead of using apt-get, you can install them with the Synaptic Package Manager located in the System/Administration menu
- $ sudo apt-get update
- $ sudo apt-get install wine and then type “yes”
- $ sudo wine /*To create the wine file structure*/
- $ sudo apt-get install recode and then type “yes”
- Then you need to copy all the necessary files from the Windows box;
- Copy the whole Adobe folder from “c:\Program Files\” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/”
- Now you need to export the registry keys of the Adone Photoshop CS2;
- In your Windows box, type “regedit” in the command-line and export the whole “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Adobe/” to “adobe.reg”.
- The next step is to copy that file to your Ubuntu box and convert it to the encoding of YOUR system. For example, if your Ubuntu box has as default charset ascii and your Windows box has ucs-2 then “$ recode ucs-2..ascii adobe.reg” would do the trick. After you converted your adobe.reg file, type “$ sudo wine regedit adobe.reg” to import it to wine.
- That’s it! Type “$ sudo wine –winver winxp “[path to Photoshop]/photoshop.exe” or create a launcher and enjoy Adobe Photoshop CS2 on Ubuntu
If you are having a problem regarding “unregistered” versions, you will need to crack your photoshop.exe file.

I did exactly as described, however on an x86_64 running gentoo64bit and with the reg import I still get ‘Your user name, organization or serial number is missing or invalid’.

As I said on Digg :
It lacks the “sudo” command for apt’s.
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install wine
should be read
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install wine
or
# apt-get update
# apt-get install wine
Moreover, if you want to avoid the dark gray look, I suggest you read:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=55286
Note that similar method works for Macromedia’s products. But hey, Gimp and Inkscape are good enought for me.

step 2 and 4 could be merged into

( PS: Your system to keep track of user (”Welcome back plagiats”) forces user to “change” his comment to fill the spam protection field again. So this is a quite disturbing and pointless feature. )

They didn’t list the method to crack Adobe CS2, which you’ll have to figure out for yourself. Note the “IMPORTANT: Here at PublicidadPixelada we have an original licence of the Adobe Photoshop CS2, but in order to use it under Linux sometimes the original *.exe has to be cracked or patched. WE ARE NOT ENCOURAGING PIRACY! In fact, we encourage you too buy this awesome product, support the developers and take full advantage of an original licence. We are just presenting a method for those who have an original licence to use it under a different platform.” from the article.

As for the recode… I found somebody suggesting that using:
recode ucs-2-internal adobe.reg
instead of ucs-2..ascii. This doesn’t make a lot of sense to me as internal is probably not ASCII, which must be required by regedit for some reason.
It doesn’t complain, but I receive a “Bad DLL” error when I start photoshop.exe — not sure if this is related.

A quick update: I tried loading an unmodified .reg file and this did not show up, while the ucs-2-internal recode modified version did. This still doesn’t confirm that the loaded reg file is not corrupt.
36 Jimmy // Oct 11, 2006 at 10:03 pm
Alright, I got the files copied, and turned them into ACII, I did this by opening the .reg file in gedit, opening it with the Unicode US-2 charactor coding. I ran it in wine, putting the -winver winxp AFTER Photoshop.exe, so it looked like “wine Photoshop.exe -winver winxp”, Photoshop pops up sort of, but than freezes, in the terminal I get the following, over and over again. Then after Photoshop FINALLY loaded, it told me the version i have is unregistered and the application exited. I’m thinking the registry key import didn’t work properly.

There’s an easier way, if you don’t mind digging in the darker corners of the internet (and if you already own a Photoshop licence *wink wink nudge nudge*). Load up your favourite Bittorrent search engine and search for “Portable Photoshop”. This is a version of photoshop that’s been hacked to run from a USB key. Usefully, this means all the registry entries are packaged appropriately for portable access. The .exe for this installation runs nicely under Wine with no further registry hacking necessary.
52 Hussam // Oct 12, 2006 at 10:04 am

Seems to work except the activation code does not work and PS stops once loaded.
I guess this is where you need a crack instead of a keygen. However, there usual suspects ( astalavista ) does seem to have a crack so I guess most people use a keygen or buy the thing?
If I find a crack will post…

I’m a debian user and I can tell you that photoshop will never work as faster on linux as on XP. Wine is a Win32 emulator, still in beta version and all windows softawres won’t be able to work as faster on a emulator as on XP core.
Moreover, if you use a pen tablet (like Wacom), it’ll be much more difficult for newbies to install and configure it.
64 bubbafrye // Oct 16, 2006 at 7:34 pm
WINE is not an emulator…. it stands for
[W]ine [I]s [N]ot an [E]mulator
just to be specific… though it is quite possible Photoshop wil not run as smooth as on XP.
I poersonally want PS on Linux because
a) i don’t want ot deal with my windows OS any more, adn I like ny Linux expierience so far..
b) while i understand that the Gimp is cool (and free, and is built for Linux) and that I could buy Gimpshop and get ‘kinda’ close to the PS experience… practically, I am a daily PS user, and it is a regular part of my workflow.. spending a few hours to cram it into my linux setup is better for my productivity than learning how to get by with an alternative.
my two cents…
oh, and i have tried the recode as:
recode ucs-2-internal adobe.reg
error:Invalid input in step `UCS-2-INTERNAL..CHAR’
&
recode ucs-2..ascii adobe.reg
error: Untranslatable input in step `ISO-10646-UCS-2..ANSI_X3.4-1968′
with no luck
and when i try running the app, i get the sam eissue as Jimmy in post
28
bummer
hmm… back to Windows for a bit…

Hi Folks I got the same errors as above with recode. I ran regedit without recode. ran regedit again without the filename and saw that the information was imported correctly. It was.
Then I opened my home directory with the file browser and navigated to the photoshop.exe file. right clicked and chose to run with “wine.” it fired right up, no initial graphics, but photoshop opened. I retouched a photo. saved it, reopened it under windows, and all was OK.
Why would you need to run any of the final commands with sudo?

I’m not sure the recode part is necessary, at least for XP. As far as I can tell from looking it up, Win XP uses UTF-8 as the default encode, and so does Ubuntu Dapper. I skipped the recode step, and that didn’t seem to bother it. (Or maybe it did, because I am having problems. see below….)
I did have to change owner from root to the ordinary user, though, which is an important step that you may want to add in to the steps above.
The command is: sudo chown -R [USER] /home/[USER]/.wine
the “-R” means it recursively changes the owner through all the subdirs.
The problem I’m having is that wine can’t seem to find any of the directories. It says \\windows\system32\winver.exe doesn’t exist, when a check of /home/USER/.wine/drive_c/windows/ shows that winver.exe is right there. Likewise, when I try to start photoshop, using the whole path/Photoshop.exe, it starts up (because I entered that particular dir into the $PATH), but then it says it can’t find plugins, fonts, and so on, and then ultimately refuses to load because it doesn’t have all its bits and pieces. They’re right there in subdirs, but I sure as hell don’t want to enter every single one of the directories separately into my PATH variable.
Maybe my, and some other people’s, problems here are because we don’t know how to add all of a branch to our PATH, with specifying each individual subdir. Anyone who can help?
72 phillip // Oct 19, 2006 at 4:36 pm

“err:shell:HCR_GetFolderAttributes HCR_GetFolderAttributes should be called for simple PIDL’s only!”
photoshop is able to launch, but it hangs up trying to load plugins and such. after about 10 mins, it finishes loading but gives me this error.
“A required application library failed to load and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application.”
any suggestions?

Hello,
In this article, i’m not sure what’s the meaning to ‘windows box’.
Do you means microsoft windows? I do not have, and my machine only have ubuntu installed.
I had do the step 1,2,3,4, while for the step 5,
i just copying the photoshop directory from a CD, and paste into ?/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/?
(the photoshop cs is a CD installation, when i use it in windows)
For step 6, i do not know what to do. I only have ubuntu, do not have mictosoft windows install.
Is this the correct article for me?

Make sure to copy the photoshop, uninstall, registration, repair, and Adobe type manager from the “Local_System/software/adobe” tree, and the whole “local_system/software/Adobe Systems” tree. This is how I got it to work.
It may also be possible to export the registry to a *win95* registry file (in the export window of the win box) and skip the recode, but that may not be true.

yes, “windows box” means computer running windows. You need to have Photoshop running on a Windows machine in order to get the registry file that you export and then put somewhere. If you have no access to a Windows machine, I don’t think you’ll be able to run Photoshop under Wine on your Ubuntu machine. But I don’t know that for a fact. I’m just guessing.
WHERE, by the way, are we supposed to put that exported registry file? In the top-level .wine directory? In the Photoshop subdirectory of .wine? Somewhere else?
Also, how about an answer to the $PATH question, since it’s hanging up so many of the readers of this otherwise interesting post?

The recode package isn’t strictly necessary. Gedit understands many different encodings but you need to add ‘ucs-2′ to the list when it complains that the encoding type isn’t detected.

@starsky51
You are obviously the idiot who knows very little about anything and feels that he must output his frustrations onto putting down others.
I am well aware of the howto title and it’s suggested running system, however not everybody runs the same distro.
Wine being a cross platform (yes, you can also run it in windows) is not distro specific and with very little customization, this howto *should* work the same between distributions - however I was having an issue with the registry import and requested help, that was all.
Didn’t your mother ever say ‘if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything’.
Thanks to all that actually are helping out others in the linux community, its a shame that the few out there make us look like twits to the rest of the world.

Hi
Great HowTo - Thank!
I solved the recode problem for me by using utf-16 and utf-8 instead, like so:
recode utf16..utf8 adobe.reg
But when i run wine with the “winver” option (”wine -winever winxp…”) i get:
wine: could not load L”c:\\windows\\system32\\-winever.exe”: Module not found
like some other people got here.
When i drop this option and simply run:
wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Adobe/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CS2/Photoshop.exe
the program starts and hangs and i see this:
err:shell:HCR_GetFolderAttributes HCR_GetFolderAttributes should be called for simple PIDL’s only!
repeated on my terminal.
ideas anyone?
86 jake // Oct 30, 2006 at 9:13 am
I managed to get it working using the $recode uc-2-internal adobe.reg which then I followed the rest of the steps removing -winver winxp from the actual command and it started and worked properly.
It takes ages for PS to load, there are a few errors that pop up every now and then, currently downloading the crossover.sh file to run that and see what happens. Over all it wasn’t that great from the get-go as far as functionality is concerned. for some reason I couldn’t add text to the image I was creating soo.. If anyone else has this problem please let us know or if there is a way to solve this, it would be much appreciated.
it’s a far cry from PS and how it should work, but I’m sure there are work arounds.
Good job what you’ve managed to do.

[…] It is possible to get Photoshop working with Wine. However, just be aware that window management reserves the Alt key for dragging windows, though you can set it to something else. This can be quite annoying, and I have not yet found a proper way around it yet (on Gnome you cannot completely disable that feature - you have to move it to Ctrl or a Super Key which I already have mapped and don’t want to change). If anybody reading this could help it would be much appreciated! […]
89 SubWolf // Oct 31, 2006 at 7:39 pm
Pretty close on Edgy actually, got to the point of Photoshop complaining it needs administrative privileges to run after appearing to completely fire up.
This is after:
- Specifying “ucs-2..utf-8″ for .reg file recode - this cures the recode errors for me, and my system uses utf-8 by default.
- Exporting the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Uninstall\{236BB7C4-4419-42FD-0409-1E257A25E34D}] section from the Windows registry - this cures the invalid registration problem.
- Patience, scanning for plugins takes a few seconds longer than usual, with many of those PIDL errors, ignore them.
Going to continue fiddling.

For the Photoshop-crashes because of “Hard or Softwareerror”
I was able to run PS once (via the copy from winbox-method) but on the second launch it crashed.
I found, that it created some cfg’s under the folder c:\windows\profile\[name]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\9.0\Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings\…
If you delete this folder (especially Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp) PS works again… seems, that it stores ther some wrong values…
The disadvantage is, you can change no settings - it will always run with defaults… But i can live with that.
(thx for the HowTo, btw)

[…] First off, Michael’s comment states that students already rejecting the laptop programme would hate it even more with an unknown operating system. I strongly disagree with this, on the basis that a new, nicer looking, faster OS with less crashes could only seduce new users. The challenging aspect of Linux does remain essential, however with regular tutorials, students could easily get used to it. Ubuntu is a simplified distribution, and really isn’t hard to use for the average user. As for OpenOffice, I personally don’t find it lacks anything, and I like the fact that it’s plugin-friendly. I entirely agree for MSN, but I was writing for a more school-oriented programme. It is very possible to run Photoshop in Ubuntu, as described here. […]

105 Neorush // Nov 23, 2006 at 1:49 am
I had the same ?Your user name, organization or serial number is missing or invalid?. problem. On some support site I can’t find the link for it warned of having multiple versions of PS installed, which I still had CS installed along with CS2, I uninstalled both and reinstalled CS2 only.
I also did some file comparison’s to make sure everything copied properly, and despite two copies the file Adobe/Adobe Bridge/install.adb did not copy either time, this is an xml file that appears to have information about the username, password, and serial registry values, so this could have been the cause.
PS CS2 then started fine, after pausing for a very long time on “searching for plugins”. However on a restart I got a general “Hardware Software error photoshop will have to exit”, per the post above you can delete c:\windows\profile\[name]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\9.0\Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings\ and PS works again?
However now I get “Could not complete your request because of a program error” whenever trying to open any kind of a file, add text, and a slew of over things. I found this support article:
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/331627.html
which basically blames the problem on bad preferences.
Any one find a way around this / have the same problem?

I got this to work…. for the first use only.
Basically, once you run it one time and close it, then try to restart it, you will get an error saying that the username, organization, and serial number are missing and the program closes abruptly.
I then deleted my .wine directory and did “wine regedit adobe.txt” to rebuild the .wine directory and popped the Adobe folder back under Program Files. Again it starts up fine…
The text tool does not work at all thought and it is full of bugs.
If you need Photoshop running under Wine, revert to version 7. It runs great.
Also, for those of you who got stuck on the regedit export… I just chose to export it as *.txt instead of *.reg file and I did not have to use the recode thing.

more precisely copy the specified dlls and run as WINEDLLOVERRIDES=”shell32,shlwapi,rpcrt4,comdlg32,setupapi=n” wine Photoshop.exe
this really improves the startup time.
also must copy Application Data/Adobe folder as stated in previous post, as well as specifying ?ucs-2..utf-8? for .reg file recode, and exporting [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Uninstall\{236BB7C4-4419-42FD-0409-1E257A25E34D}] section from the Windows registry which cures the invalid registration problem.

I actually have a slightly better way in doing this (which is mostly based on this one):
it is mostly the same except that it requires almost no extra space (if you dual boot), it keeps your plug-ins synchronized between your Windows Photoshop and Linux Photoshop and you will not need to download and muck about with recode.
Just follow all steps as described above, except for, don’t sudo apt-get install recode
Instead of copying the whole Adobe directory from your Windows partition to Linux, just make a mental note of the location when mounted in Linux (my Adobe folder is mounted on “/media/winsys/Program\ Files/Adobe” ). Open up a terminal and navigate to your Wine Program Files-dir as so:
cd ~/.wine/c_drive/Program\ Files
then enter the command
ln -s “/media/winsys/Program\ Files/Adobe” Adobe
Replace “/media/winsys/Program\ Files/Adobe” with the location on your system, but don’t forget to put in the quotes! (otherwise you will end up with some bad links, which you can delete with the unlink-command). This command makes a symbolic link to the Adobe directory on your Windows partition, so it doens’t require any extra drive space.
Then, the other problem encountered was with recode. This can be avoided easily. Just like above, go to your Windows box regedit, and export that hive, but in the Save File dialog box, choose ” Win9x/BT4 Registration Files”. This will automatically put the reg file in plain ANSI for you.
I hope some of you will get it to work this way. I’ve just tried it and it works on my Ubuntu Dapper Drake install (no problem with activation, Photoshop is only a bit slow (with 100% of CPU on a Core 2 Duo T7400) when booting up, but works quite fluently once booted up).

How do I determine what the default character set is in Ubuntu? Also, how do I determine what the default character set is in XP?
124 gcoles // Feb 6, 2007 at 8:37 am
I did get a cracked version of the Photoshop install working *based* on the above instructions, but I had to change a few things, and still ended up with on major error, that seemed to go away on its own.
From Kubuntu Edgy on my AMD Athlon-XP 2600 machine, I did the following:
- Install wine (sudo apt-get install wine)
- No need for recode on my system, so I didn’t worry about it
- Run winecfg once, as a regular (non-root) user, to generate the ~/.wine directory structure, then close it
- Copy Program Files/Adobe and export registry keys as noted in above Howto
- Import registry keys as noted (skipping recode step), EXCEPT DO NOT RUN AS ROOT USER (do not prefix the command with `sudo’)
- Run Adobe Photoshop like this:
wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Adobe/Adobe\ Photoshop\ CS2/Photoshop.exe -winver winxp
(Again DO NOT RUN AS ROOT)
Yes, there are a ton of “HCR_GetFolderAttributes” errors during the “Reading preferences…” and “Scanning for plug-ins…” sections of the startup dialog, which was missing the background banner image, but after about 60-90 seconds (your speed will vary), I was at a seemingly functional Adobe Photoshop UI. I was able to open a jpg image from my Linux ~/Desktop directory and start editing. Upon the first two times I tried running photoshop, I somehow ended up getting this (unrecoverable) wine error:
fixme:sync:CallNamedPipeW L”\\\\.\\pipe\\Adobe LM Service0ECA17E3-C1AE-4b96-89EF-8F8F0D78AF81″ 0×33e04c 24 0×33e034 8 0×33e028 0
wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0×00001104 at address 0×7efb5b24 (thread 0009), starting debugger…
However, the third time, as I wrote this reply, I was able to get a fully functional photoshop, with the ability to change levels, use filters such as lens correction, blur edges, variations, etc, as well as opening and saving both jpg and png files. I have posted the screen shots to my flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gcoles/sets/72157594520682027/
Note that, when I tried clicking on a filter, such as lens correction, it took a good 30 seconds for the dialog to come up. After that, everything was lightning fast (dare I say, even faster than my dual 3GHz PIV Windows-based editing machine with double the RAM). I was quite impressed. All filter dialogs seemed to come up quickly after the initial wait. I will continue to experiment with this before I decide upon actually using PS in Linux seriously, but so far it looks quite promising. I imagine that a bug report or some work with the folks at Wine could help fix the HCR_GetFolderAttributes errors.
I hope that my experience can either help others with their technical problems, or further encourage them to work through any issues they encounter with this. I will also be trying this out with Adobe Lightroom, since it was copied over with the registry/Program Files export, as well.
Awesome work by the Wine team!

for ubuntu edgy ,
make sure to make a copy of your wine-dir and delete it, run wine photoshop.exe
then the problem appears
so you have to enter wine encode ucs-2..utf-8 adobe.reg then
make sure that you did not have tried some other recode on this file before (if you tried it with ucs-2..utf8 or whatever it don’t work then)
if your wineversion will not switch with the –winever.exe, no problem run winecfg and set winxp in this gui.
this works 100% if your photoshop-version works in windows, and you copied the whole dir
