This HOW-TO covers up the whole process of installing Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 & Macromedia Flash 8 in a Ubuntu box in a few simple steps. Any questions or feedback leave them in the comments. This method can be applied also to make Macromedia Studio 8 run under Ubuntu.
- What you need?
- A fresh install of Ubuntu Dapper + all the updates
- A Windows box with a functional install of Dreamweaver 8 and Flash 8 or Macromedia Studio 8
IMPORTANT: I own an original license of the Macromedia Studio 8, but in order to use it under Linux sometimes the original *.exe of Flash and Dreamweaver have to be cracked or patched. I’M NOT ENCOURAGING PIRACY, I’m just presenting a method for those who have an original license and want to use it under an alternative platform.
- Fire up a terminal session and type the next commands;
TIP: Instead of using apt-get, you can install them with the Synaptic Package Manager located in the System/Administration menu
- $ sudo apt-get update
- $ sudo apt-get install wine and then type “yes”
- $ sudo wine /*To create the wine file structure*/
- $ sudo apt-get install recode and then type “yes”
- Then you need to copy all the necessary files from the Windows box;
- Copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Program Files\” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/”
- Copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Documents and settings\All users\Application Data” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/window/profile/all users/Application Data/”
- Copy the whole Macromed (No mistake with the “ai”) from “c:\Windows\system32\” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/window/system32/”
- Finally, copy the whole Macromedia folder from “c:\Program Files\Common Files” to “/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/”
- Now you need to export the registry keys of the Dreamweaver;
- In your Windowx box, type “regedit” in the command-line and export the whole “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Macromedia/” to “macromedia.reg”, then copy it to your your Ubuntu and convert it to ascii with “$ recode ucs-2..ascii macromedia.reg”. Afterwards, type “$ sudo wine regedit macromedia.reg” to run it with wine.
- That’s it! Type “$ wine dreamweaver.exe” or “$ wine flash.exe” and enjoy Dreamweaver & Flash in Ubuntu
Additionally, if you want full functionality download the latest version of winetools and install TrueType Font Arial, dcom98, MFC 4.x and IE 6.0 SP1

Wow a HOWTO just to install a program. No wonder Linux blows.
Installing software:
Linux - HOWTO
Windows - Installer program (VISE, MSI, etc)
Mac - Drag and Drop

If you don’t like Linux, why bother trolling on a Linux How-To?
Anyway, your comparison sucks…
Installing Linux software on a Windows box is harder than installing Windows software on Linux…
Of course Linux Software on a Mac is usually not that difficult, but that because it is a form of BSD, which is very similar to Linux…

This line:
Copy the whole Macromedia folder from ?c:\Documents and settings\All users\Application Data? to ?/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/window/profile/all users/?
I think should read this:
Copy the whole Macromedia folder from ?c:\Documents and settings\All users\Application Data? to ?/home/YOURNAME/.wine/drive_c/window/profile/all users/Application Data?
But either way, this was an excellent tutorial and worked beautifully. I didn’t need to convert the reg file to ascii either because I copied it like this:
1. Open the network file browser
2. Go -> Location
3. smb://xpbox/c$
4. Then copied the file using the file browser, from there to a location on the ubuntu box
29 alex // Sep 10, 2006 at 3:24 pm
yeah, i get that message too, and i cannot for the life of me figure out how to solve it. The problem is that there is no ascii character set on the default install of ubuntu (at least i cant find one) so recode fails (ascii = ansi_x3…). I can’t find out how to install this character set though, and am at a loss on how to convert it otherwise.

Not working for me.
On my windows box there is no Application Data folder at:
C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data
There is an “Application Data Techsmith” folder that Snagit uses, but no Macromedia folder in there.
Following the rest of the directions and trying to run either dreamweaver or flash.exe all I get is:
mark@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ wine Flash.exe
wine: could not load L”c:\\windows\\system32\\Flash.exe”: Module not found
(I tried dreamweaver.exe, Dreamweaver.exe, etc too)
I would LOVE to get this working. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Solved the problem Macromedia - XGL.
Nice How-to, now I don’t need Hasefroch anymore!!!!!!
For Joe Blowsa:
Please go home and shut up if you are not interested, you should apreciate others work because the only thing you are able to do is double-click install.exe in a windows box. Why don’t you try to install XGL and Compiz in Windows XP, jajaja!
Asterisk for VOIP, try, try. Sad news, don’t try to install native linux applications on Windows.
Maybe you can install Cygwin, however you can’t make it work!

To the people getting:
“wine: could not load L?c:\\windows\\system32\\dreamweaver.exe?: Module not found”
I believe (I’m a Linux newbie too) that if you want to run the application from the terminal, you first have to be in the application’s folder (/home/username/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/).
However, instead of running it from the terminal right click on your desktop and create a launcher using the appropriate path in the command,
i.e, enter this in the launcher’s command field to run Dreamweaver:
wine “/home/your_user_name/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Dreamweaver.exe”
To the people having problems encoding of the registry file:
I followed mp’s suggestion above, and I copied the file from ubuntu using nautilus.
I first exported the registry key from Windows and left it on my windows desktop. Since I’m dual booting, I then navigated to the windows desktop from ubuntu, copied the file and run it through wine without encoding it.
I hope this helps.
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial!!

Hi
Thankyou thankyou thankyou for a great tutorial. Had a problem at 1st because i transfered corrupted Dreamweaver files from my windows computer over my personal network, doh. But once i re-transfered and followed the instructions again top dollar :oD
SO chuffed, thanks dude, who needs windows anymore!
However my 2 cents…. folks who are having the problem with ?wine: could not load L?c:\\windows\\system32\\dreamweaver.exe?: Module not found? TRY this fix!
I know its been said before how to do this but this is newer clearer instructions for newbies, detailed better ;o)
To load up either dreamweaver OR flash in terminal try this command, but don’t forget to replace the “CHANGE2YOURPROFILENAME” with your own profile name.
TO LOAD DREAMWEAVER
wine “/home/CHANGE2YOURPROFILENAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Dreamweaver.exe”
TO LOAD FLASH
wine “/home/CHANGE2YOURPROFILENAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Flash 8/Flash.exe”
Please notice no need to sudo in terminal to load…! (Of course u could always try sudo if it doesn’t load).
Next up if you want to load up either dreamweaver or flash using an icon, this is the way to do it!
Right click on your desktop (obviously to create a desktop icon) left click on create launcher.
In basic tab fill in Name: Dreamweaver
Paste In Command box: wine “/home/CHANGE2YOURPROFILENAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Dreamweaver.exe”
Click the icon and choose a desktop icon you would like to use.
That should be it. Double click the icon on the desktop and voila, dreamweaver should load up.
Follow the same procedure again to put a flash icon on desktop. but remember to put Flash in the name box and this command line in the command box: wine “/home/CHANGE2YOURPROFILENAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Flash 8/Flash.exe”
One more thing make sure u change CHANGE2YOURPROFILENAME to your profile name. :oD
Hope this helps anybody :o) Cheers PublicidadPixelada for the quality guide!

OK. I am not a Linux newbie and I can’t get it to work. I get the:
wine: could not load L?c:\\windows\\system32\\dreamweaver.exe?: Module not found
This has nothing to do with setting up a launcher, or running with sudo, or running from the command line.
Perhaps someone can post a real solution instead of just random guesses?

To all the people not finding your ‘Macromedia’ folder in All users/Application Data it’s because you need to show hidden folders in Windows to see it (off by default).
In Windows Explorer click on Tool –> Folder Options –> View and then scroll down and click ‘Show Hidden Files and Folders’
Then you can just copy it to your shared network folder and copy it using Samba or whatever to Linux.
There’s like a picture Flash 8 in Open Suse running on my blog
50 Davide // Sep 29, 2006 at 11:58 am
Hi. Nice tutorial, but I have some problem.
After following all your instructions, if I launch one of these commands (in the right folder)…
wine Dreamweaver.exe
sudo wine Dreamweaver.exe
wine Flash.exe
sudo wine Flash.exe
…I have some problem, with differents errors, all like this:
err:shell:SHGetFolderPathW Failed to create directory ‘L”c:\\windows\\profiles\\ricci\\Cookies”‘.
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0×7fb9f7d0,0×00000000), stub!
fixme:shell:_SHGetDefaultValue (5,L”"), LoadString failed, missing translation?
err:shell:SHGetFolderPathW Failed to create directory ‘L”c:\\windows\\profiles\\ricci\\Desktop”‘.
After, wine open the Flash (or Dreamweaver) window saying “there was a problem during the installation, please repeat the installation”.
I have thought that I am italian and I have Windows in italian, so maybe the registry keys and the path are different.
So I have tried to rename “Program Files” in “Programmi”, “Application Data” in “Dati Applicazioni” etc.
But it still doesn’t works.
Or, better.. it works, it open a Flash window, but it is an error window
Someone have some ideas?
bye
Davide

Tim,
It’s been a few weeks now but if I recall correctly you just need to open a terminal and then navigate to the directory where the reg file is located (do this after you have converted it via the instructions!) and then just type:
wine macromedia.reg
I believe this just installs the registry key into the wine/windows registry.

actually, i still have that error. but if i navigate to the actual .exe file (e.g. /home/jay/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/) and right click on the Dreamweaver.exe file. then i clicked on the “Open With Other Application….”, then i clicked on “Use a custome command” and typed wine in for the command. it worked.
i still can’t run it from the terminal. what am i missing?

[...] Flash 8 and Dreamweaver working on Wine [...]
70 jay // Nov 5, 2006 at 9:40 am
I am trying it on Edgy. I get this popup error when dreamweaver begins:
The following JavaScript error(s) occurred:
At line 2 of file “C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration\Startup\helpDocs.js”:
ReferenceError: MM is not defined
–I click ok, then another MM error in a slightly different location at line 3
–I click ok again same error at line 8
then
Dreamweaver encountered problems while constructing the menus from the current menus.xml file.
Please delete the current menus.xml file and rename menus.bak to menus.xml
And I don’t know what to do about that! It stops dead there.
71 JayK // Nov 5, 2006 at 10:16 am
Hey I tried it on edgy. It didnt work. There were some erros regarding JavaScript errors and then clicking through those gave me a message about deleting a menus.xml and renaming a menus.bak file (couldn’t find these files) The error was something about MM not defined.
Next I tried Flash 8 now I have nothing but a blank desktop in Edgy, not toolbars menu bars or anything. I dont know what to do. I may have to start over! Damn

Worked for me in EDGY by:
1. setting up a base system with winetools
2. using the last wine from winehq.
3. exporting the entire registry.
4. converting it to 8bit ASCII with scintilla text editor.
5. $wine regedit whole_registry_ascii.reg
6. create the hardlink “c:\Documents and Settings” pointing to “c:\windows\profiles\”
7. putting all the “?c:\Documents and settings\All users\Application Data” stuff in “c:\windows\profiles\all users\Applications” (OR Applicazioni if you are italian).
8. creating an hardlink every time some folder’s name is language dependent (eg. it-IT=”Dati Applicazioni” —hardlinkto—>en-EN=”Application Data”
good luck:)
74 George // Nov 15, 2006 at 6:41 pm
This worked perfectly for me. I’m running edgy with AIGLX & Beryl.
The only thing I had to do differently was install SCiTe to recode the .reg file. I was going to install scintilla like the post above suggested but I couldn’t find it in the repos so I just installed SCiTe. Once scite is installed, simply launch scite–>file–>open–>browse the location of your exported registry file and open it. Once your .reg file is open in scite you’ll be able to change the encoding (I beleive the option is in the file menu). You need to change it to 8 bit.
If you’re actually copying the files from within Windows, and not transfering the files from a windows partition or share, you can open the .reg file in notepad and change the encoding from there. In notepad you just open the file, then go to ’save as’ and there should be a dialog where you can choose the type of encoding you want to use.

OK! Resolved the bugs on dreamweaver 8!!
Don’t leave any file from Common/Startup, listen here:
just add these following code on the top of the file
~/.wine/drive_c/Programmi/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Configuration/Shared/Common/Scripts/dwscripts.js
function MM()
{
}
Save and run!
It works?

to all :
after sudo apt-get install wine —->
do not do : sudo wine - you will get this kind of messages -> wine: could not load L?c:\\windows\\system32\\dreamweaver.exe?
because then U can only run Dreamweaver with: sudo wine dreamweaver.exe
so for use Dreamweaver as User not Root use the following command sequence :
$ sudo apt-get wine;
$ wine
NOT
$ sudo apt-get wine;
$ sudo wine
this way ‘wine dreamweaver.exe’ will work ELSE if U already do : $ sudo wine, then use dreamweaver with: sudo wine dreamweaver.exe.
Succes to all !
PS: for the guy with MS installer -> normally a Linux user install apps. with a single click on Synaptic or other GUI package manager, or with a single line of code -> sudo apt-get wine, smart install wine ..etc. Also Linspire distro has the best way to install software(via CNR - Click and Run ) from this world.

wow, instantly worked on ubuntu edgy.
thanks, you saved my day!
78 Notte // Dec 8, 2006 at 3:51 pm
Spent two days on this…
I collected all the errors read here.
Now It works quite ok, a bit slow, but It does the work.
As a last try I renamed my .wine directory (mv /home/user/.wine /home/user/.wino) and made a new one (launching wine alone).
Followed the tutorial steps again and guess? It worked.
I suppose there was some relict of a previous wine installation, maybe something installed by winetools o ies4linux.
Now I have a “clean” wine and evry winzoz app I need working.
I read somewhere about people who could not open flash files: this happened to me too, and I found that “wined flash” do not open files on folders outside “fake drive c”, so create a symbolic link to wherever keep your fla files and that’s ok!
Well done boys!

80 mr. hans // Dec 11, 2006 at 10:43 am
i’m using flash and it’s kinda working,
but it’s loosing parts of my library all the time (yes!),
crashes without reason, and sometimes corrupts the fla format when saving.
anyone has an idea?
81 Simon // Dec 12, 2006 at 3:51 am
Not working here.
Dreamweaver loads but then says
A problem was detected with your application. Please reinstall this software to correct the problem.
I also have no macromedia folder under c:\documents and settings\all users\
I do have one under c:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\
So I tried to copy that one to my .wine all users folder but still get the error.
I then setup the folder ‘All Users.WINDOWS’ on my linux box in corresponding place, but still no joy.
Anyone having similar problems??
82 patc 6 // Dec 16, 2006 at 5:49 pm
I had some issues at first, but looked in the windows\system32 and saw shortcuts. Then I thought wait a second and called the file directly. In other words, put the full path in.
Example: $ wine “C:\\Program Files\\Macromedia\\Dreamweaver 8\\Dreamweaver.exe” and it ran like a charm.

I have c:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Macromedia
Copied it to ?All Users? on my wine linux box in corresponding place. It worked fine. Note I removed “.WINDOWS”. I think that this is added during a reinstallation or update of Windows, and is used by other applications instead of the original “All Users” folder.
I have various earlier versions of DW like MX 2004 and I just deleted these from the various directies. Also I only exported & then imported Dreamweaver/8 (ie not 7) and it worked fine.
88 Ian // Jan 1, 2007 at 1:04 pm
Absolutely exellent it works. There were a few typos in the original instructions involving some initial capital letters and missing “s” from windows and profiles. Here is a corrected version which could be used in a script: (my user name is “ian” - change it to yours, or /home/ian could be replaced with ~)
* Copy ?c:\Program Files\Macromedia?
to ?/home/ian/.wine/drive_c/Program Files?
* Copy ?c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Macromedia?
to ?/home/ian/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/All Users/Application Data?
* Copy ?c:\Windows\system32\Macromed?
to ?/home/ian/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32?
* Copy ?c:\Program Files\Common Files\Macromedia?
to ?/home/ian/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files?
To run in a terminal type
“wine /home/ian/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Dreamweaver.exe”

I always see that mac is BSD and like Linux. If it is so similar, why are we trying to run emulated windows programs when these same programs rum on mac. Wouldn’t it be easier to emulate mac or just port the mac programs to Linux?
90 Mads // Jan 10, 2007 at 3:31 pm
#68: Excellent question - I suppose there’s an explanation, but I’m curious as to what it might be. Evidently mac and linux are both unix based… in theory this oughtta make a port possible as notnow suggests, or…?
—
Anyway… I formally got it working using this method with Flash (time has to show how stable it is). However, I can ONLY start Flash by directly clicking the Flash.exe file in the .wine dir.
As such I cannot create a working shortcut to the Flash.exe file in the .wine dir nor can it load from the command prompt. I copied the Macromedia folders from a native language version and I suspect that this may be the reason as some of folder names in the native dir varies from the .wine dir (e.g. the .wine dir “Program Files” is named “Programmer” in the original dir). Some here has suggested making hardlinks to resolve this issue, but I’d appreciate if somebody could provide a _step_by_step_ approch as to how to do this.
Cheers!

Try this on fedora core 6 and ubuntu edgy. Install wine 0.9.30 , and run the dreamweaver and fireworks windows .exe installer. One command :
apt-get install nvu
(nvu is similar to DreamWeaver, but free (FLOSS)) If this is not simpler than :
* open a browser
* search on versiontracker.com
* double-click on the installer if there is one or drag and drop otherwise
* look for serial numbers if you want to crack it (and be illegal)
* etc.
Then yes, Linux is really too complicated and I should give up computing. Otherwise : please consider using Linux too, especially if your right hand burns from using too much the mouse.

About the Wine file structure (and for future reference):
I had never used Wine (nor Linux) before and the command
$ sudo wine
did not create the needed Wine file structure where I had to copy my Windows files to. I created it myself and tried copying the files to those directories but of course that did not work. The command
$ winecfg
however did the trick. It opens a configuration window but right before that, it creates the file structure. You can just close the window again.
The rest of the instructions all worked (running Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft with all updates).
Thanks heaps!

Quoting: I believe (I’m a Linux newbie too) that if you want to run the application from the terminal, you first have to be in the application’s folder (/home/username/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/).
That hit the spot for me, couldn’t wine the whole path.
AND I can confirm it works in 7.04 Feisty… Sweet

Great job! I finally got Dreamweaver 8, Flash 8 and Fireworks 8 all working. Thanks a lot for the how-to and contributions from some great people above.
To the people who have issues with Fireworks 8
Just go to http://www.dll-files.com amd download the file gdiplus.dll
copy it to your system32 folder under “wine”
eg. /home/your-name/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
Fireworks 8 should work after that
If you are able to install Tahoma font for Linux you will see them look like 99% as working in windows :-).
Good luck to all

Hi a all tank’s for the grat howto… I have a small problem, I don’t understand this ……
In your Windowx box, type “regedit” in the command-line and export the whole “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Macromedia/” to “macromedia.reg”, then copy it to your your Ubuntu and convert it to ascii with “$ recode ucs-2..ascii macromedia.reg”. Afterwards, type “$ sudo wine regedit macromedia.reg” to run it with wine.
Without this my flash starting… loading the font …y it vanishes……..can anyone help mi………

Hey, i thought i added the registry and ran it, it said “A problem was detected with your application. Please reinstall this software to correct the problem.” when i ran Flash.
Do i need to copy everything again?
Also, is there another folder i need to copy besides those mentioned in the howto? Somebody said they need to copy their “feature”folder.
Thanks
Andy

Never mind my last comment. It’s working now, but I can’t make new documents. When i press “new flash file” it does nothing and brings me back to the same screen, and when i open an existing one it says “could not open document!”.
What is this?

I have few suggestions which worked for me on feisty and flash 8 with wine:
- After you install flash 8 as above with suggestions above, if still having problems, you can check these:
1. After exporting your XP Macromedia registry, use SciTe to save it as 8 bit encoding format. Then, you dont need to use recode. It works.
2. After step 1 above, if you have still problems such as flash pro splashes on start and then terminates, it is possible that you installed Default debt as 16.
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change it to 24.

awesome write up, works great for me on 7.04
142 Gustavo Vieira Figueiredo // Jul 17, 2007 at 8:50 pm
it worked perfectly with my 7.04…
I only had some little problems… first, a can’t publish (ctrl + F12) or even open the “publish settings” box… it says that something about the “HTML templates”.
And another thing is that when I “ctrl+enter” to see my movie, it says that there is missing the “Arial Baltic” font, but even in Windows I don’t have this font.
Any idea?
Thanks and congrats again for the helpful topic.

I followed instructions on 64-bit Fiesty, but got “Macromedia Product Activation - Please reinstall your software…” etc
Anybody got it working on 64-bit?
I did copy the Application data folder as directed.
It looks tantalisingly close!
