Why does Microsoft has an open proxy on their corporate network?!

January 13th, 2007 · 4 Comments

I was surfing the internet looking for proxies when I stumbled upon this one:

131.107.64.93:80

Quite fast & reliable actually, but as the privacy concerned person that I am I decided to investigate a little further into this proxy just to know whose network I was using ;)….

Microsoft Proxy

I was quite shocked to see this because the vast majority of the open proxies out there are due to misconfiguration and they represent a serious security risk.

So please someone tell me why does Microsoft has an open proxy in their corporate network? Is it just misconfiguration… or something more evil?

I’ve been clobbered by this bloody open proxy non-stop since 10th Jan 07 incessantly comment spamming my personal website, I have reported it to abuse@microsoft, but got a reply suggesting I used email filtering?, not exactly sure how this will stop their open proxy being abused to post comment spam on my webpages, but maybe microsoft know better
I have replied to their automated robotic script without a clue to suggest they actually read my logs and perhaps do a few websearches for instances of their IP baing used to post comments spam . I await with baited breath for their reply - I’m hoping it will suggest I upgrade to Vista as they have patched up all their vulnerabilities now, depite my webserver running headless I can almost wet myself with excitement as I imaging a glass 3d desktop that will distract me from actually doing anything productive with my hardware,,,but wooo I can fly round my glass desktop, perhaps their routers have monitors and they are too busy flying round the icons and windows in 3D to actually lock them down

I’m betting this is an evil plan formulated by Microsoft in order to start up a fascist dictatorship over the elve people of Turkmenistan.
